About the Editor:

Nancy Luenn

Nancy Luenn grew up in an untidy house full of books, cats and children.

“From the time I first learned to read,” she reports, “I was a bookworm. My family didn’t have a television, so my mother read aloud to us each evening.

“My brothers and I told each other stories in the games we played. We created worlds for our toys and cities full of paper mice, put on plays for our families, pretended the pond in my yard was the ocean and rowed across it to England in a boat named Pooh.”

A Los Angeles native, Luenn earned a B.A. at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. She began writing children’s books the summer before her last year of college while working for the U.S. Forest Service.

“Writing teachers advise to ‘write what you know.’ I write about the ideas that compel me. Usually that means a lot of research. This is a part of the process I always enjoy.”

A Horse’s Tale: Ten Adventures in One Hundred Years was proposed as a book for the 1988 celebration of Washington’s statehood centennial. Since Parenting Press publishes non-fiction almost exclusively, the publishers wanted an experienced children’s author as editor. Luenn brought together ten stories, one for each decade of statehood.

Today Luenn works in a library and lives on Washington’s Whidbey Island. She blogs at storyquilts.blogspot.com.
