About John Gottman, Ph.D.

John Gottman

How we recognize our emotions, how we feel about them and how we cope with them all affects how we nurture children—and that's what led to What Am I Feeling.

Beautifully illustrated with photographs of children, What Am I Feeling helps adults identify their parenting and caregiving style. It describes the five important steps that John Gottman explains are part of "emotion coaching" children. Kids who can accept and express their emotions do better in life in many ways, he believes. They form stronger friendships, achieve more academically, recover more quickly from emotional crises and are physically healthier.

Dr. Gottman is a psychologist who has spent his career studying emotions, physiology, and communication. Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child: The Heart of Parenting is his best known parenting guide, one of dozens of books he has written or co-authored. His breakthrough research on marriage and parenting has earned him many major awards.

A professor emeritus at the University of Washington, Gottman was educated at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
