Janan Cain and Steve Metzger Can Visit Your School

Author/illustrator Janan Cain and author Steve Metzger are experienced presenters and would make ideal guests for your preschool or elementary school, especially for "Meet the Author" events. The Parenting Press marketing staff can also help promote your event and provide images for book pre-order forms.

Cain's presentations, adaptable for kindergarten through upper elementary, often include her reading The Way I Feel and a demonstration of drawing facial expressions that communicate emotions. She uses three images from The Way I Feel and discusses how simple shapes and colors can depict anger, sadness and joy. Kids can follow along, creating their own drawings with the handout available free as part of the Expressing Emotions how-to plan. Detailed teacher guides for use with The Way I Feel and its Spanish edition are complimentary with the purchase of 20 copies of either title from Parenting Press or $5 each.

Based near Chicago, Cain usually visits schools within a day's drive. Each presentation is about 45 minutes, and she can do as many as four per day. Each group should be no larger than 60. Schools are responsible for her speaking fee, travel expenses, and when an overnight stay is necessary, for lodging. Because of the time involved with inscribing books at an event, schools are encouraged to solicit pre-orders so that books can be autographed in advance. For more information, see

The author of more than 60 picture books, Steve Metzger usually speaks within the New York City metropolitan area at preschools and to primary grades (K-3) in elementary schools. His presentations feature a reading or two from his books, audience participation, an explanation of how ideas become picture books, discussions about feelings and character development, and interactive storytelling.

Each presentation is about 45 minutes, and he can do three per day. The preferred group size is 40–60, although larger groups can be accommodated by prior arrangement. Books can be pre-ordered from his publishers and autographed between presentations. Schools are responsible for Metzger's speaking fee and any travel expenses. Contact information is at

A detailed teacher guide for The Way I Act has been created by Metzger. It is also complimentary with the purchase of 20 copies of the book from Parenting Press. Regular price: $5. You may also like the presentation plan he created for use with adults, "Teaching Kids about Their Actions."
